Childproofing Your New Home

15 Ways to Ensure Your New Home is Kid-Friendly -

1.SAFETY LATCHES - Install safety latches on all cabinets and drawers to keep children from poisonous products and potentially dangerous household items.

2.MEDICINE - Keep medicines and other similar products stored in the original containers away from easy to reach places.

3.TOILET LOCKS - Be sure to install toilet locks on toilet seats in order to prevent children from potentially falling in and drowning. Drowning can happen even with only one inch of water.

4.HOT WATER - To prevent burns from hot water, install anti scalding devices on all faucets and shower heads.

5.SET WATER THERMOSTAT - Another way to help prevent burns from hot water is by setting the water thermostat to 120 degrees. Anything over 140 degrees can cause burns to children in as little as 3 seconds.

6.UNPLUG - Unplug all hair dryers, curling devices, and electrical appliances when not in use to prevent electrocution from contact with water in bathrooms and kitchens. Also be sure to keep all heating devices such as hair straighteners away from curious children to prevent burns.

7.OUTLETS - Cover all unused outlets with outlet protectors or safety caps to prevent electrocution.

8.SAFETY GATES - Use safety gates at the top and bottom of staircases to prevent children from climbing and/or falling from the stairs.

9.DOOR KNOB COVERS - Use doorknob covers to keep children out from rooms with potential dangers (like swimming pools or gyms). Be sure that the doorknob covers are easy for adults to use in case of an emergency.

10.BUMPERS - Corner and edge bumpers are good to use on furniture or fireplaces in order to prevent injuries such as bumps and scratches.

11.OUT OF REACH - Be sure to keep furniture away from high windows so that children don’t climb them and can potentially hurt themselves.

12.WINDOW BLINDS - Make sure that window blinds don’t have loops cords to prevent strangulation from happening.

13.LIDS - Remove free falling lids from things like toy chests. Be sure that the lids are either attached or very light and removable.

14.TIPPING FURNITURE - Prevent furniture from tipping over such as bookcases, shelving, and heavy furniture by using walls with anchors and brackets.

15.STORAGE - Store items with heavier things on the bottom shelves or bottom drawers.
